The ship delayed the departure time so that we could visit the Palace
this morning. The throne room was
beautiful with great oriental carpets, large crystal chandeliers, gold leave
furniture and the throne (and no photos allowed).
Behind the palace was a scale model of Angkor Wat as it would have been when first built.
Next stop was the Silver Palace.
The floor of the Silver Pagoda is covered in 5000 silver tiles, most of which were covered with carpets to protect them. The pagoda housed a number of country treasures including the Emerald Buddha and a life-size gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds, the largest of which weighs 25 carats. Pretty dazzling and, of course, no pictures were allowed inside.
We also saw another large stupa on the palace grounds.
After the visit, the ship departed Phnom Phen and shortly afterwards we
were out on the Mekong River.
The ship’s tour guide gave a very interesting talk on Vietnam and his
life as a young Vietnamese growing up during the Vietnam War time and
after.
About 3:30 the ship dropped anchor – a noisy affair – at the Vietnam
border to deal with the border crossing – the ship had kept our passports from
the beginning of the cruise to facilitate the border crossing. Passengers have nothing to do; the ship takes
care of everything.
Mary had a massage, we enjoyed the ice cream social – it has been, and
will be, hot and humid.
Tonight we ate at the Chef’s Restaurant. The food was excellent and a white chocolate
fondant dessert was absolutely divine.
All guests were allowed to eat at this restaurant one night on the
cruise. Wish it could have been
more.
The cruise had a local group perform a show in the lounge.
