Sunday, Oct 16 - Sa Dec, Xeo, Cai Be

The morning started out rainy but we all gamely boarded the local boat that dropped us off in Sa Dec. We visited a shop that was selling at least 20 different types of rice.  Who knew there were so many types of rice?

From there we wandered through the very colorful local riverside market.

We also got a peak into an apothecaries shop where there was a large cabinet full of small drawers containing various herbal and folk medicines.

The shore excursion included a stop at the childhood home of French writer Marguerite Duras.

We also stopped in at the house of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, Duras' Chinese paramour. The house was a combination Chinese and French style.

Next we boarded a motor coach for Xeo Quyt, once used as a hide-out by the Viet Cong during the French and U.S. wars and now an important ecological site. Mary stayed in the bus (too rainy and she is nursing a cold).  There were some pretty lily ponds...

We saw some bunkers, bomb craters, and underground rooms that had been opened up, and had a nice walk over some narrow bridges.

This view of the field from observation the tower was a mine field with the mines on stakes.  This type of mine field was used against helicopter landings and tanks.

After lunch on board, Paul took a small, local boat to Cai Be’s spectacular floating market.

Each boat showed what they were selling by hanging some product from a tall pole.

Paul then visited Keit’s house, a historical house built in the Vietnamese style, as opposed to Mr. Huynh Thuy Le house.  Paul couldn’t see much difference.

The gardens had lots of fruit including jackfruit...

Going in to the village, our boat’s cover scraped the bottom of the bridge.  Since the tide was coming in, our boatman went back under the bridge.  After visiting the village, we walked back to the other side of the bridge to meet the boat.  We saw another boat that was on the village side of the bridge.  They could not get under the bridge.  So they removed items on top the boat’s cover, and had all the passengers crowd in the front of the boat.  Now the front could go under the bridge, and the crowd moved slowly back so the rest of the boat could go under.  Very interesting to watch.

Water was so high that some of the houses along the shore had water coming in.
