Wednesday, Nov 16 - Chiang Mai - Bangkok

We had a fairly early start today and headed to the airport for our flight to Bangkok.  During the drive in we saw more of the realllllly humongous billboards along the road.

Driving into Bangkok from the airport we also got glimpses of several tall buildings...

including the tallest building in Bangkok.  It looks like it is made of building blocks with some of the blocks missing along a couple of its sides.  Pretty interesting looking.

We then boarded a long-tailed boat for a trip up the river and through some canals.  Apparently Bangkok has a lot of canals.

This was a fairly interesting ride and not too terribly hot as long as we were moving.  We saw an Asian Water Monitor that had tucked itself on the rocks under a building...

and we stopped to feed the fish.

The final stop of the day was the Wat Traimit Witthayaram Wora Wiharn (Wat Traimit) temple where we saw a five and one-half ton, 18-carat gold statue of Buddha.  It was believed to have been cast over 700 years ago.  At some point it was plastered over to disguise it, to prevent its theft.  It wasn’t until 1955 when it was being moved, that some of the outer layer cracked off when the Buddha was dropped.  The cracks revealed the gold.  It is a pretty awesome and shiny statue.  It is about 10 feet tall and worth over $200 million dollars.

After this it was a quick drive through Chinatown and the flower market...

and the bustling Bangkok streets...

and then to the hotel where we spent the evening repacking and then hit the bed early.
